Something about touching Luna was like biting into a green apple. Also, it had to be summer, because Ginny never quite expected it. She'd imagined Luna would taste sweeter, somehow; not this sharpness.

All that smooth, unbroken skin; those pale, shining eyes. Luna kept her eyes open as long as she could, smiling slightly at nameless things that Ginny liked not to imagine.

She bit Luna's pale, smooth shoulder, staring at the tiny pink tooth-marks she left behind. Luna didn't make a sound, and Ginny licked at the mark with the tip of her tongue, feeling much too perverse.

"Are you listening?" There was never an answer. "Tell me you're listening, will you?"

Luna always lay motionless, dreaming with her eyes wide open after sex, which might not have bothered another girl. But Ginny wasn't another girl, and she expected the witch who'd just had her fingers in Ginny's mouth to look at her and possibly smile.

Ginny didn't say anything quite deliberately, waiting for the other girl to speak first. She smiled a cat's sated smile for now, turning on her side and entwining her upper leg with one of Luna's. Luna blinked, shifting slightly on the crisp linen. Ginny's hair fell in a sheet over her bare breasts, but something about lying on her childhood bed with her childhood friend made her feel more modest. More....

"This is what girls are like," Luna whispered, rolling her shoulders a little against the propped-up pillow. She closed her eyes, turning her face towards the window, and Ginny was a little hurt, but this is what she was like. Trying to expect her girlfriend to be fully present was like expecting the moon to shine with its own light.

"I suppose," she said absently, then started. "Like what are we?"

"We're together, and together we're the same. Like moonbeams and sunbeams are the same." Luna smiled happily. "Don't you think so? We blend in."

"I don't know what to think about the things you say sometimes, you know that?"

"And I don't know how to think the things I say," she smiled.

Ginny laughed. "You do it on purpose, don't you."

"What?" Luna said, turning her head towards her. The moon lit up her blonde hair, making it look paler and much too ethereal. Ginny liked Luna in the sunlight, more. "I do what?"

Ginny shook her head. "Forget it."

"If you want me to." Luna was still smiling, and Ginny sat up, hugging her knees to her chest, her sheets wrapped around her. "I can forget things for you, if you like."

"You're just-- you, that's all." Ginny sighed.

Luna was sitting up too, though she didn't bother with modest coverings. She sat cross-legged, with her smooth white thighs spread easily and her head cocked curiously to the side. Luna had never seemed surprised at Ginny's kisses-- had never hesitated to touch Ginny's freckled skin or sleep in Ginny's rickety old bed. They'd never asked each other what they wanted: they just blended in, pale gold into bright red.

A single pale hand reached out, landing on Ginny's foot; Ginny started, but didn't pull away. Her desire for speed, for sudden movements, seemed somehow less important the more she was with Luna. Why rush when you could take your time to explore the secret corners of things? Why squander those precious secrets carelessly?

"And you're just you. And the world keeps floating."

"Hmmh?"

"Oh. Did I tell you this before? They've almost proven it, you know. The world is round, yeah, but it floats in a huge ocean of tears which is full of many dying fire-drakes that look like stars."

"That's not true," Ginny said uncertainly. "Daddy says the Muggles have pictures, and--"

Luna was looking her straight in the eyes, and Ginny couldn't look away for the world. "And are you going to believe him, or me?" she whispered.

"I dunno, love," Ginny grinned.

Luna laid her head on Ginny's shoulder, eyelashes fluttering against her neck. "You have to believe me, Ginny."

"Do I?" she mumbled. "Nnnn... maybe...." Ginny's mouth found salty skin and skidded, and then things got tangled (like the sheets and their long hair and somewhere there were their feet) and their teeth clicked and their tongues slid and there was something new. There must have been something hidden-- secret and liquid smooth. This was the taste Ginny almost overlooked, there on the tip of her tongue.

"You do now," Luna said sweetly.
