Man... I feel like I shouldn't say this 'cause I hate hyperbole, but I feel like this slash!meta-fandom vid by [livejournal.com profile] lim is the best vid in the history of like, fandom. By the end I feel like crying every time I watch it again. It's just so powerful and intense! And the song is so perfect & addictive! And... *gibbers*
Basically, I agree with [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza, who said it was awe-inspiring, and I wouldn't say that lightly! It really sort of wraps up slash-fannishness in an aura of... joy & wonder, just like, I dunno, Christmas and puppies, okay. And even though I don't have multiple fandoms, per se (though I read in different ones), it also encapsulates why I personally feel like a slash fan, and not just an HP fan or a member of X fandom. I feel like I have the attitude (the heart??) of a slash fan no matter what. I just-- I just have always thought that slash was SO AWESOME, so transformative, so... an approach to texts and media that I'm so very fucking passionate about.

And it's not (necessarily) about how 'realistic' it is, how relevant to real social/personal issues or gay rights or proper literature or ANYTHING THAT IS NOT SLASH-- it is about slashing in itself, the act of it, which on the personal level, can definitely be revolutionary and deep and meaningful, an avalanche that turns-- that becomes-- fandom. That turns into this entity of us.

Especially coming along now, because I often see-- or have!-- arguments about things like how it's not hypocritical for slashers to be homophobic(!) and how people just write bodyfic for pure fantasy-fulfillment and sometimes it feels like a lot of people are here but they don't care. They don't really care about the characters, the dynamic, the theory behind all the pretty (which is ridiculous! not care? we're fans!) Just the sort of immense, crazed geekiness that gets lost in the bustle of umm, porn (which is great! but eventually empty). And then people say fandom IS porn with varying seriousness and I laugh along except when I start to take it seriously and then it's like. WAH. And I feel like there's nothing keeping me here at all, and it's just empty-- pointless.

And then. THEN. There is this vid! WHICH IS GENIUS. And which is like, bursting with love and meta and everything that is so painfully awesome about fandom. About fannishness. And about US!! (And, y'know, it's called 'Us'! So! It makes sense!!) :D :D :D

It just makes me feel like slashing-- being fannish-- being involved in this great big avalanche of meta and fic and discussion and boylove and writing-- man, that's the greatest thing ever. ♥♥♥ It makes me feel like WE ARE SO COOL, the geeky slashy dreamy pervy girls. :(( And a lot of times in fandom, that just gets lost, and I miss it. The love. I missed it <333333333333333333333. This really makes me wish I'm still slashing, still writing fic for something when I'm 30 and when I'm 40, makes me wish this way of seeing and interacting with media never leaves me, and I think it never will, now. It never really will. ♥.

Thanks for reccing this! I really loved it too.

I wasn't going to comment because I couldn't think of anything to say besides 'Word!' --but then the very next entry on my flist was a fic search in a comm that said: "There was a story posted awhile back about Harry loving his car and then picking up Draco who changed gear in a slutty way and then they had sex."

Made me rofle. ;D

The cool thing about lim's vids is that they reward (well, actually *require*) repeated viewings. I think I only actually got what was going on "this is how it works" after only about 80 viewings. Of course I now sing that song all the time, but... anyway. This one, I could only recognize about 60% of the material, and who knows if that's because I'm not familiar with it, or if it just went by too fast or too pencil-y. Big props for giving TOS the respect it deserves though. :DDD

I don't remember you being into Stargate at all, but Cartoon Heroes by [livejournal.com profile] mamoru22 is totally also fandom metalove as well. It's meta is more about the creation than what the fans do with it, but it's so jumpy and happy and really reminds me of that 1st blush of love when you're totally into everything about whatever and all aspects are shiny and facinating and fun. I think it's fun to watch no matter, but then, I know about Stargate, so have no idea if it will work for a nonfan as well.

If you recognized 60%, that's way more than me!! Star Trek is the only one I could reliably recognize (and of course Spike... I'd know Spike anywhere). Man, someone said it was an ode to how K/S rocked the world, that's totally one of my initial readings of it :)) It does make me want to watch it over & over again, but I don't actually get -that- much more from each iteration (maybe 1% more information), so it's definitely not just you. :D Then again, I always get addicted to vids I like and they make me want to prolong the high. There's something about vids I just get giddy about the way fanfic never gets me. Most of the time I was watching the vid passively (not trying too hard to understand), so it's amazing the message came through so loud & clear anyway!

Haha, it took me a time or two before I got what Cartoon Heroes was about, but when I did it was awesome! It's awesome thinking about the geekiness from the actor/creator stand-point being met by our geekiness like yin & yang or somehting (that is, thinking of the actors as 'people like us' is awesome too... like, the actors/writers/directors, the characters, and us, and all of us both ordinary & amazing). It didn't work for me 'as' Stargate but in many ways Stargate is pretty representative of sci-fi hero shows, isn't it :))

yessss!!!

this couldn't come at a better moment because recently i've been thinking a lot about the politics of fandom and readership and slash and all the hostility to the idea that it could have a further meaning beyond the pretty was taking me down.

Yeah, that was totally my reaction :D The cool thing was the way it -was- about the pretty and how the obsession with the symbols/characters translated into an avalanche of meaning sort of by itself-- sort of like natural propagation or something. Like, a lot of the scenes (like the mind-meld! and the hand-holding!!) were so much fodder for fannish squee, and the whole thing was really like a mind-meld union of meta & squee. Meta!squee :D
