Nov. 3rd, 2004 03:20 pmThis land is my land. And it is yours. And it is ours.
The important thing is to believe that when it's most difficult, and when people try to make you feel like you're a stranger where you are-- that's when you say, I live here with you.
Take it as you will, but today I woke up and thought, I love this country. Not just the people I agree with-- or the states I wouldn't mind living in-- the point is, I love this land and its people especially when they're torn apart and distrustful of each other and lost. Because home is not where it's cozy or warm or safe-- home is where the heart is, and this is my heart, even if it hurts. Especially when it hurts.
It is hard to say it today, but that's why I'm saying it.
It's not that I don't care who's in office, because I did feel kind of sick-- but mostly numb. I've been so numb for so long. But I know this much-- this is never going to be over until we do stand together, for real. For real.
So. This land is my land, and here I make my stand. I live here with you, fellow Americans. I live here with you. Please don't leave. We all need each other, as hokey as that sounds. We do.

Date: 2004-11-03 04:51 pm (UTC)It all comes down to perspective, really. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately about my country, our country. I was also chatting today to a friend who’s from Belfast and she was telling me about the Troubles and the horrible political division and strife there, that I hadn’t really known much about till I met her. And hearing stories like that, and like yours, just makes me stop and think: I have it so good here. We have it so good here. Even though some people might not really think so. (And it’s not even that people who live in countries where the political climate is different couldn’t have good lives - some do and some don’t - it’s just that I take so much about America for granted, and I do it so easily.)
And it’s like you said: this is my home, this is my heart. It’s like...like a traveler who sees their country out the window of the plane after a long time away and they just sigh and say ‘home’. Because that’s what this place is to me, even if I don’t agree with everything that goes on here. No matter where I end up living throughout my life, this is where I’m from, and I’m proud of that.
I’m going to shut up now before I burst into song. :)
