~~we are-- the elementals

contrasts are the most amazing things. they make you appreciate their component parts yet fill you with the haunting, painfully right music that these dissonant notes can make together. inevitably, i think of colors (i see a lot of symbols with color references), but also seasons and emotions. love & hate, that's what brought us here. pale & dark, and yes & no and open/closed. the need to bring them together-- the fascination of watching them rip apart. it seems like any space between them is painfully too large, even a millimeter can feel like a mile, because of the tension, the scraping of skin, the minute ripping of the self as it attempts to encompass its opposite.
``opposites attract" doesn't really even begin to describe it. because really, it's not just `love', it's not just a `pairing'-- it's just the way the world works, and once you start looking for it, you see it everywhere, like an ongoing, fractal dance of infinite proportions. the oppositing charges at the heart of every atom, powering its movement. gravity implies anti-gravity. love implies hate. and both contain their opposite within themselves--
``Your joy is your sorrow unmasked. And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears." ~~Kahlil Gibran
that's why
ishuca's latest ficlet sent such powerful resonances through me-- the yin and yang references were rampant within it, and they felt so right. that's why i want to see draco in character, so that, if anything, the picture of how they are secretly similar would attain greater resolution, greater definition. i want to see minutely, their inevitability, their epic connectedness.
and ``if it's not love, what is it?"
chiriko's ficlet in
hpdrabble just-- totally cemented this theme in my head, and now it's almost unbearably, perfectly vivid. hot & cold & burning. and, flame doesn't have only one color...
`` They had... dementia."
it's not really sane, not really anything you can bear, is it? it's something of a force of nature, using you, something almost beyond instinct. yes. it's almost as if it's not just harry & draco-- it's like they'd been transfigured, distilled into pure essences of themselves-- spring vs fall, hot vs cold... that's what touching would do to them. incinerate, to the bone.
and definitely, one can ask, if it's not love-- if it isn't-- what is it? perhaps it's just, elemental.
~~
hmm.
i just-- i realize that these stories can be considered "dark" or "angsty" or.... well... something like that.
and it bothers me, because, to just, take away the skin of things, to leave them raw and bleeding and real, that shouldn't be called angst, that shouldn't conjure images of really bad girl-poets in darkened rooms, burning some clover and listening to the cure.
angst is sort of, creating something out of nothing, worrying and being over-emotional and crying because you're "sensitive". if something feels real, that's all it is. what about the stories where the characters are enduring the pain, without crying or whining or even being aware of their own tragedies, just kind of trying to survive? what about stories where instead of sad, they get angry and passionate and they bite back? people do endure things unknowingly, all sorts of horrible things, just because they love, or they need. and then they wind up cutting out their own hearts, because they think they have to. and we, the readers, we may cry and feel angsty, but the characters are just caught up and oblivious and so steeped in the pain they don't even know there's any other way to be. they are at the mercy of their own personal destinies, they are at the mercy of this elemental thing they're caught up in.
and then, if it drops them, if it goes away, i think they may be too numb and shocked and desolate to even feel it as they fall away.

and that's my angsty thoughts for today :P
