reenka: (because draco is a little BITCH.)

Thinking about this bit on Draco on Dorrie's fandom opinion post just kept needling me all day, and I suspect I won't rest till I say -something- about it, so here goes:

    I know it's in response to an opinion I agree with (ie, Draco should be shown as not-so-goody-two-shoes to start with in H/D fics), but... to say he's "a Malfoy" and therefore he's going to do shady things?? Argh. That hurts my brain. A lot. A LOT.

I actually talked about this with Ste earlier this summer, because I really like my Draco with 'a little bit of bad'-- not 'shady' and DEFINITELY not because of his past/family, but just because I think he truthfully believes in what his family/upbringing/environment had him primed to believe, and it's not going to just poof! Go away. So I could see him making 'questionable' potions under the table after the war (to add a little spice), but... man. Then Ste said 'not after HBP and everything he went through if he did leave Voldemort afterwards' and... yeah.

There's no way in hell Draco wouldn't change at a basic level if he got to the place where he's a normal functioning member of post-war society, reasonably trusted by Harry (who's NOT A NAIVE DOOF, OKAY), allowed to, y'know, not be in Azkaban and so on. He better have "moved on" or he risks everything-- and this boy is not one for needless risks. Even a very necessary risk in HBP nearly had him tearing all his hair out; he's -not- going to be Wicked Badass Slytherin anytime soon. Actually, one of his central characteristics in canon is that he likes rules (he liked Umbridge!!) and he likes working within the rules to his benefit. That's what being a Slytherin pretty much means, fandom :/ :/ No, it doesn't mean being an out-and-proud sexy-rebel Death Eater, which is why Lucius recanted immediately after Voldy's first defeat :/ Thaaaat was because he was a MALFOY and not a GRYFFINDOR :/ Not to mention the great examples of Snape & Slughorn-- both rather slippery and avoidant of showing their 'true colors' for different reasons, but both for Slytherin reasons; remember how much Slughorn didn't want to get involved at all?? YEAH.

Plus, this annoys me EVEN MORE because it implies Draco did 'morally bad' things (because of his family name, no less), rather than, uh, vaguely annoying/mean-spirited things (most of the time) and desperate morally-grey things when pushed to the breaking point (in book 6). HOW does this spell 'master of disaster' is something I'd like to know :/ When I say I like my Draco 'a little bit bad', I mean I like him to (realistically) keep a good portion of his prejudices, his feelings, his lame taunts and underhanded sort of I dunno... outlook in general. I want him to be a Slytherin little bitch, but this doesn't mean actually 'doing morally bad stuff'. :/ :/ As far as I'm concerned, a Slytherin who's all-out flagrantly 'corrupted' went too far to the Gryffindor side (what with the dangerously blatant advertisement) & is a bit too much of a joke. Like saaaaayyy... Voldemort is. :/
    Draco's the pathetic-yet-persistent Slytherin-- always has been, always will be. (So I'm just... still annoyed at the constant idealization of him into either the nice-and-reasonable pale cowed boy or the snarky independent badass codename 'Malfoy', the cat who walks alone. Christ. Hello, normal characterization balance, nice to uh... pretty much never meet you. :/ *sigh*) I think it just sort of hurts my head to see a fanon characterization passed off as canon so casually/confidently, but I suppose that happens all the time, yeah.

Also. Being "a Malfoy"? Doesn't explain anything except his hair-color; now, if you mean 'Lucius Malfoy's son', that's different. That explains a lot about various daddy issues, and probably why he was so into the Hand of Glory, but. Argh.

*goes off to tilt at some more windmills*

Man... I really wish I had something coherent to say about most yaoi... it just makes me so much happier than like, ANYTHING to do with HP or fandom outside of my writing & a few other people's (you know who you are, basically). I'm just looking at a raw by Mika Sadahiro being posted at yaoi_daily and it's just... YUM. "And then there was porn, the end" :P (Though actually there's also stuff like the one-shot by Saika Kunieda, which shows you it's -not- All About The Porn... it's the adorable storytelling... and the porn). I really like the art, too :9

...it's just really sad that I lock this 'cause I just don't wanna discuss it but being around fandom types just pushes my buttons so I rant, I guess, like one of those 'press a button AND SHE SPEAKS' dolls :/ Plus it doesn't help that I'm a lot more wordy about the things that annoy me than a lot of other things. But mostly it's just only HP fandom where I'm moved to be like, BUT NO, YOU ARE SO WRONG!!!! WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!! :/ (...yeah, if it was Methos and Duncan or Heero & Duo, I'd be like 'oh well... too bad, so sad'.)

So! Just to spread the (severely lacking in this post) fandom love, I give you Harry!art by um, girl-farting. It's all yum & cute & awww <333333333 hehe. Must repeat to self: this. is. why. in. fandom. THIS. IS. WHY. *___* Aaand, she does a really nice Remus! :D! ♥. Her MWPP is love. Whee, I AM CURED :D :D

I love the fact that in canon being a Malfoy means absolutely nothing. I mean, seriously. The most meaning it has is that he's the son of that one character, and that he's named after the concept of Sartre that he embodies, which doesn't exactly translate into rebel but more "authentic self" (if he breaks out of it, that is). On its own it pretty much says that he's constrained by society, doesn't it?

Anyway, the great thing about him in canon is more that he's a Black which means...well, it's much better than Codename:Malfoy to me. It means he can be a lot of things, but all of them probably highly strung and overly dramatic and emotional.

Yeah, I've been seeing more references in fic to him being a Black, though I've still not gotten used to it... I suspect that he probably doesn't think of himself as being 'from' his mother's family, though naturally the genes are there? I'm really kind of curious how the Blacks in general are perceived in the Wizarding world now that the family's basically fallen apart. I suppose if you extrapolate to the normal reputation one has as part of the aristocracy in say, England, it means something to 'a Spencer' (like, Diana was?) but at the same time it's probably a different situation among purebloods... more like being 100% Jewish is seen in Jewish circles, I imagine. 'Goyim' or 3/4th non-Jews are probably looked at somewhat like halfbloods/Muggleborns ^^;;; But then that's not 'being Malfoy' in specific... ^^;

I didn't know it was Sartre! :D Well, I really don't know who's -not- constrained by society in some way... though probably more Harry & Draco or Sirius & Remus than Dumbledore and Voldemort. Though I'm not sure what you mean by 'authentic self' since I thought 'Malfoy' meant 'bad fate' or something like that--?
