reenkaI know this is going to sound stupid... but ever notice how recent (post-Hogwarts) H/D fics generally have Harry & Draco's relationship be All About The Great Sex?
...um. Or rather, what I mean is, they bond (if they bond) through sex. This just... keeps happening, whether or not I'm reading a PWP. I'm sort of... I don't know how I feel about this. *___* Not Good? (Saying this as someone who loves smut, H/D smut, and really most remotely well-done fics -with- H/D smut). I literally cannot remember fic equivalent to the awesome, the brilliant, the only Duncan/Methos grocery-shopping fic. Oh Julad. <3. (And possibly this is because I like to click on fics except those rated R or higher unless I trust the author? But! Damn, can't some of those summaries entice me more? Like, I can't resist groceries! For instance!)
This is particularly why I don't like established relationship fics. There's -always- this feeling of 'well, they fuck a lot... that's what they DO' (and of course that is probably likely to be -true-, but). I definitely feel... like smut&snark is a great formula if you're just writing a get-together fic, 'cause everything is new & exciting & shocking, like a great conflagration of OMG NOOOO SEX WITH MALFOOOOY NOOOO. But in post-Hogwarts-type established relationship fics, it's like 'oh yeah... sex with Malfoy... I'm so into that-- every Monday and Thursday' and I'm like OH HARRY, YOU POOR POOR BOY. :( And then the fic probably hits me where I'm down & has them thinking about how boring & predictable their relationship is and/or how one of them cheated and/or how they're about to split up or they need counseling. Aaaaand I'm trapped in a soap opera and I CAN'T GET OUT (by which I mean, somehow fics with 'adult versions' of the characters seem... weirdly sappy and/or melodramatic to me most of the time 'cause it's just soooo hard to do fics which are all leeched of plotty/background conflict yet subtle and also badass. And I really... I really kind of hate both sap & melodrama. And Harry & Draco being all snarky-but-sappy about their sexlife... *starts to cry*)
Possibly this, as many other things, is because I can't love any other fic after whatever I think of as 'The Fic' for that type. Like, there's no other they're-sleeping-together-but-they-snark-but-it's-cute fic after Cimorene's classic (and painfully adorable) 'Sleeping With the Enemy'. *sigh* (...or possibly everything's better when the snark's actually funny? I DON'T KNOW OKAY.) Possibly it's not so much 'funny' as 'calculated to amuse me because I am a bit too addicted to perversity and/or absurd sarcasm' of a sort. Like:
"News flash, Potter," Draco drawled, unfastening his robes at the neck. "The forces of the Dark Lord? We're evil. I can't say we usually concern ourselves overmuch with sportsmanlike behavior." Now a narrow triangle of the skin of his chest was exposed.
"...Right," Harry agreed absently.
(Ahhhh! ♥♥♥!! And I can just hear people saying 'but REENA, that's LAME' and I knoooow but that's what makes it so cuuuuute.... The problem is that most adult!H/D isn't nearrrrrly lame enough & expects me to take them seriously. *snorts* As if. Yeah, uh. Their, uh,burning softly-bubbling yet angsty soft-porn lurve? Um.)
