reenka: (because r/s is AWESOME.)
[personal profile] reenka
Man, I was browsing R/S writers' journals (which... btw, don't contain a lot of R/S these days :O!!) and I found this, which is a screencap with the titles of a bunch of R/S fics... brilliant titles, gorgeous titles, titles that I'd nearly chew my finger off to come up with myself, and....

Okay, this just started me thinking about title-naming, obviously. I've never been one of those people who thought it was -hard-, 'cause I just come up with some quote from the story or try to sum it up in a cute/punny way or something, but I never do the longish 4-7 word titles that impress me so much *___* I was looking, and my titles never go over 4 words, and are usually 2 or 3 at most! Which may make them snappy, but also boring :( Ahhh, titling is an art all in itself.
I mean, seriously. 'Five Ways to Open Your Arms' or 'Go Forth to Meet the Stranger' or 'Fear in a Handful of Dust' or 'Map of Your Head' or just 'Quixotic'... ahh :(( *envy!*

...This is really the sort of thing that makes me want to write. There should be a challenge/prompt-fest just to steal people's titles and remix them :P I COVETTTTT, PRECIOUSSSSS :((

However, all this R/S-hunting also makes me meepy 'cause the peeps are not as prolific as H/D by a long-shot, and most of it's small angsty little vignettes or so-fluffy-it's-somewhat-bland MWPP stuff :( :( WHO SHOULD I BE READING? :( I mean, I don't mind angst, I just wish it were longer, IC MWPP-era angst with some fluff in it :( And also smut. (And I'd also love cute fluffy smutty stuff that isn't too fluffy... and by 'too fluffy' I mean: 'raises any serious issues whatsoever'.) IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK? :(

EDIT - Man. If I ever forget how hot Draco is, I just have to look at this. o_0 SERIOUSLY. *____* Though [livejournal.com profile] kasche's latest R/S makes me even happier. ♥. *____* Alsoooo... [livejournal.com profile] calyxess' H/D fanart makes me happy :> Cute & sorta old-school, yeay :D
PS: GO ON AND TELL IF ME IF THIS ISN'T A MUCH BETTER PANSY THAN THE MOVIE!CANON VERSION!!1 :O! (...even if that's not actually Pansy fanart... heh)

I suggest reading track lists of albums, esp. indie albums.

Oh, you think that's what it is? 'Cause I just feel weird stealing titles, actually... well, I mean, outright. I can get inspired by them, though, so that's probably a good idea :D :D
I've always had my own homegrown title for things, so that's something... maybe... :>

I know people do it - Map of your Head is by Muse, and every phrase and millions of variations are used for songs. There are more songs than there are stories, so it is a rich feeding groud. I don't like it when people use them, esp. newly popular indie band titles, but they can indeed be an inspiration.

I once planned to structure my SGA-in-London AU around all song-titles by Ed Ball/The Times, which is a bit like doing all underground stations in New York.

And you made me hunt for http://www.angelfire.com/ill/hathor/yaoicorner_background_background.jpg this picture - sorry for only having the manip but your Draco link and icon reminded me of this like no other image ever recalled another.

Hahaha that's like Yuki Eiri!Draco :D :D :D Love. I actually really enjoy certain kinds of fanon, as you can see :)) Also, THAT MOUTH I CANNOT RESIIIIST THAT MOUTTTHHH. *is pouty-Draco!mouth obsessed*

I feel like having the structure of say, the song-titles of a creative cd to structure my fic around may help with writer's block, maybe. Maybe a part of me just feels lame having long/emo titles? heh.

Heh! I was actually glad to see the differences, because for a moment I was so spooked, I hadn't looked at that pic for 5 years or so.

I'd highly recommend it, it can't hurt (then again, my writer's block is different). Long titles often are lame, but more often (in SGA at least) they are used for humorous fics. Here it is the norm to use one obscure words, or two. They are so obscure that nobody uses them and nobody remembers them or gets them right. But the four-word titles are also quite hip, and I tend not to like them - those are indeed for emo-grieving-fics.
Having said that, my WIP is called We're Off To See the Man Behind the Curtain Over the Rainbow, which already tells you all you need to know about my problems with the fic itself.

I remember a R/S I quite liked once... It was completely AU and it was SO LONG OMG. I liked to never have finished. It was not MWPP-era, but I still adored it. There was a great Remus quote, something along the lines of, "Love isn't all grand passions and Russian romance novels."

I am off to find it. I shall return!

Of course it is by [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge. No wonder I liked it. *smacks forehead* I am fairly certain that means you must have read it as well. XD

Yep, I've certainly heard of it! Though I still haven't read it 'cause it's long, semi-Harry-centric rather than romance-centric, post-MWPP & plot-heavy :)) My ideal fic is probably something in between Seven Things That Didn't Happen On Valentine's Day At Hogwarts, Or Maybe They Did. (http://glitterati.illuminatedtext.com/fiction/seventhings.html) and The Dating Disasters of Sirius Black (http://www.riddikulus.org/authorLinks/KabeyK/The_Dating_Disasters_Of_Sirius_Black/) with a dash of my first love, Drawing Down the Moon by Ailei & Khirsah. Ahhhhhh. ♥. (I am picky, finicky & moody, in other words, ahahah.)

Speaking of "indie" music, this song reminds me of you for some reason:

http://wobblygoblins.com/bleedingears/blackbear-ibelieveinimmediacy.mp3

Feel free to poke around the directory as well. :) I can attest to the fact that "indie" music (continued use of quotations, haw haw) does indeed sport some interesting titles. I would be happy to provide numerous examples.

(So far the best way I've found to locate oddball indie has been joining http://last.fm or browsing music review sites like You Ain't No Picasso. (http://www.youaintnopicasso.com))

HEE! That song is so cute!! Almost as good as the Mr Spock song (http://lyrics.duble.com/lyrics/N/nerf-herder-lyrics/nerf-herder-mr--spock-lyrics.htm) as far as reminding me of me, ahahah :D :D Thanks :D I wish I could upload the Nerf Herder song, but it's not on my laptop :( I love snappy cute&dorky songs :> They also have a song called 'Doin' Laundry' (about jerking off into a sock) I really appreciate >:D :D

You know, I just sort of randomly pick up mp3s and cds, to the point where I don't even know if what I listen to is "indie" or not o_0

Me too. I just love getting songs! It's like the digital equivalent of collecting books.

Have you ever heard anything by Of Montreal? They have a hilarious little ditty called "When a Man Is In Love With a Man." There is also "Tim, Wish You Were Born a Girl." I would be happy to upload them for you. XD Gay gay gay.

Heeeee!! Omg, too great. No, I've never heard of them~:)) All my knowledge of gay music is the usual, like George Michael, David Bowie & the Beatles ;)) :D :D
...I -have- heard of the apple candy song (http://www.lyricsdir.com/ben-lee-apple-candy-lyrics.html), which is gay & also famous :-? HAHAHAHA AND THEN HE MARRIED THE GIRL, WHO'S ACTUALLY CLAIRE DANES :( :(

Ha, I find the occasional gem. And I had never heard the apple candy song! Awesome.

On with the songs:

Franz Ferdinand - Michael (http://wobblygoblins.com/bleedingears/franzferdinand-michael.mp3)
You must have already heard this. I am making sure.

Of Montreal - Tim, I Wish You Were Born a Girl (http://wobblygoblins.com/bleedingears/ofmontreal-timiwishyouwerebornagirl.mp3)
Tee hee.

Of Montreal - When a Man Is In Love With a Man (http://wobblygoblins.com/bleedingears/ofmontreal-whenamanisinlovewithaman.mp3)
Gay gay gay.

Muckafurgason - You Ain't a Man (Until You've Had a Man) (http://wobblygoblins.com/bleedingears/muckafurgason-youaintaman.mp3)
So true.

Lola Ray - What It Feels Like (http://wobblygoblins.com/bleedingears/what_it_feels_like.mp3)
Sorta gay.

The Magnetic Fields - I Thought You Were My Boyfriend (http://wobblygoblins.com/bleedingears/themagneticfields-ithoughtyouweremyboyfriend.mp3)
Back to gay square one.

BONUS: Muckafurgason - Dictionary (http://wobblygoblins.com/bleedingears/muckafurgason-dictionary.mp3)
From literally gay to figuratively gay, yes this is actually a song about the dictionary. An ode, dare I say?

Wheee! Thankooo <33333 I also must say The Magnetic Fields is one of my favorite (I would say 'bands' but it's more like 'handful of mp3s', but I love 'I Don't Want to Get Over You' & 'You and Me and the Moon'... and for some reason I associate them with a band called Yo La Tengo, which has a smashing song called 'Autumn Sweater'). I was also thinking of Air and Sexy Boy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSfrFLBaLsM) (that's the vid), but it's not a gay song at all & rather a song about monkeys in space. In French. Woe :/

You know who has good titles? Susan. And Cathy, even though she hasn't written HP forever. Good titles kill me, but I so rarely have them. I really like the title "If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things," which is a book I really want to read right now. And once, Dan Chaon gave us an excerpt of a short story from him, titled "Let Me Hear From You Urgently," and that made me fall in love, too. One of my favorite titles of all time is Cathy's "light as a surrogate for everything." AHH. SO GOOD.

Okay. The end. I like titles. :)

From: [identity profile] yourpoison.livejournal.com
You are so cute sometimes <3
Um. Yes. I love the 'light' one, though thinking about it, it's like, how can the story measure up unless it's a very... certain kind of story, I guess? All abstract or metaphorical? I mean, (okay, for example) if you write a fic called 'and a butterfly landed on her nose', how can you get away with making the whole fic relevant to that? It just seems the longer the phrase gets, the more specific it gets, or something. I dunno. It's easier with poems ^^;;; I've forgotten what kind of titles I gave mine, but I think they were on the short side also :(

PS. WHAT IS IT WITH ME AND THE EBIL TYPOS OF DOOOOM :O!

From: [identity profile] loftily.livejournal.com
The best title I ever came up with was this last spring, with "Speed is Velocity with No Direction." People in workshop said I should change it, but I was like, No! It's my title! Anyway.

That's true, too. Instead of stealing titles from band song titles, I like taking lyrics. Like, I like the fic called "Armed With Every Precious Failure" - it was on pornish_pixies awhile back - from the Weakerthans' song "Aside." But then, there are some perfectly good titles that are only a couple words, so, I don't know! I'm such a sucker for titles, though. Srsly. Even in bookstores, if I see something, I'm like, ooh, I have to look at this. Titles and book covers. I guess that means I'm judgmental from the start.

Poems are way easier! But somehow mine mostly end up being one word anyway, or some rambling sentence that doesn't actually make sense.

From: [identity profile] yourpoison.livejournal.com
Ahaha, I really don't know what you're supposed to look at -but- titles & book-covers! I mean, the blurbs come later -plus- they're not even written by the writer & half the time are overdone and sound stupid. So you basically have to read a page or 10 if you're really gonna figure it out, what to buy on a 'deeper intellectual level'. God, anyone who can type that without quotes is NOT a person I ever want to talk to, btw -.-;;

I love coming up with insane poem titles & then writing a poem. For instance, I just thought, 'the fragility of pecans'. Or perhaps, 'the fragility of certain pecans' :D :D :D

Well, a part of it's that-- I mean, if she's -blonde- and Draco's gf, it doesn't seem as... permanent? But that's silly of me.

Mostly it's that Ivy's Pansy & my Pansy started out blonde *pout* I've always written her blondish. She looks more prissy that way!

It was just -weird- 'cause I pictured her like this (http://lberghol.livejournal.com/297271.html) or like this (http://tetherhooks.livejournal.com/2651.html#cutid1). I dunno why I'm so attached to [livejournal.com profile] tetherhooks' Pansy, but I am ^^;;; Movie!Pansy looked prissy without being... having that little-angry-yappy-dog-with-a-floofy-bow feel which is what I get from canon. She looked more cool, which I guess applies to Lucius and Hermione and even Harry with his smooth hair...
