This is probably the scariest and most interesting online test I've yet come across-- the 'would you have been a Nazi' test.
I think because it ties into my whole pet shtick about how we're all responsible for the world, and if we blame anyone, we should also blame ourselves for whatever evils are about. It's a philosophical stance rather than an accusation, though a lot of people do take it as such, as in, 'what do you mean it's my fault? what do you expect me to do?' Well, the main thing I expect people to do is not to be so easily brainwashed by the dominant rhetoric they're exposed to, and I realize this is most likely asking too much. But what else can I say?
Because if we are not responsible for each other, how can we be fully responsible for ourselves?
I don't think I've really figured it out or anything, except that I wish people were more curious, less accepting of whatever feels good to believe, more... intellectually brave, I guess?
I hate knowing that at any moment, the old mistakes could get made again (and -are- being made). I hate feeling like as a species, we just don't learn; we don't remember; and largely, we don't even care unless it bites our noses off.
I really think the main reason I wouldn't have been a Nazi is my sheer antisocialness and lack of will to dominate or be dominated. I resist all rhetoric by default just because I'm a contrary bitch, really, and that's one thin line between me and my darkest self. It's a thin, thin line between the self we know and the self we could be influenced into becoming.
~~
And even so... even so....
I trust Albert Einstein, don't you?
He helped make the atomic bomb... but I adore him, and admire his big pretty brain, and respect him as a human being, because he was conscious. He acknowledged his mistakes, was worried about the future, wanted to know the face of god and yet didn't think he could ever fully encompass the truth he sought after. Without that ideal... I often think, without that ideal there would be next to nothing.
~~
Also, I was just too chuffed (aww, shucks) at the same test guy's result for the 'what's my style of humor' test. Man, I love being the Idiot Savant. It even -sounds- like me >:D

The Expatriate Achtung! You are 30% brainwashworthy, 22% antitolerant, and 19% blindly patriotic |
Congratulations! You are not susceptible to brainwashing, your values and cares extend beyond the borders of your own country, and your Blind Patriotism ("patriotism" for short) does not reach unhealthy levels. In Germany in the 30s, you would've left the country. One bad scenario -- as I hypothetically project you back in time -- is that you just wouldn't have cared one way or the other about Nazism. Maybe politics don't interest you enough. But the fact that you took this test means they probably do. I'm gonna give you the benefit of the doubt. Did you know that many of the smartest Germans departed prior to the beginning of World War II, because they knew some evil shit was brewing? Brain Drain. Many of them were scientists. It is very possible you could be one of them, depending on your age. Conclusion: Born and raised in Germany in the early 1930's, you would not have been a Nazi. |

VULGAR | SPONTANEOUS | LIGHT You like things silly, immediate, and, above all, outrageous. Ixne on the subtle word play, more testicles on fire, please. People like you are the most likely to RECEIVE internet forwards--and also the most likely to save them in a special folder entitled 'HOLY SHIT'. Because it's so easily appreciated, and often wacky and physical, your sense of humor never ceases to amuse your friends. Date: 2005-08-10 03:52 pm (UTC)Also, many of the German scientists who left before the war did so because they were Jewish. The Nazis gutted Germany's (and eventually Austria's) physics departments by stripping Jews of their university appointments, and of course worse things that that were threatened. The Nazis' loss, our gain. The Manhattan Project was full of people who had excellent reason to believe that they (and their families) would have been murdered if they'd stayed in Europe, and that if Hitler won, they (and their families) would be murdered wherever they happened to be. Racism is evil, of course, but on a purely pragmatic level, it's also stupid. /Slytherin analysis of history.

Date: 2005-08-11 02:08 am (UTC)And dude, I... er... yeah, I knew that about Einstein & Bohr being Jewish, though I wasn't sure if it wasn't also a German-national brain-drain as well...? I guess it's incorrect to imply that the scientists left because they were such concerned citizens or something (though my test result is still correct since I'm from an intellectual Jewish family, I guess... either I'd have been in a concentration camp or on my way to America). It does seem almost funny that a lot of the test would be rendered moot in some cases if one of the questions was 'Are you German-national?'. Heh.

Date: 2005-08-11 03:27 am (UTC)You're right, more people were leaving besides the minorities that the Nazi's policies threatened directly. And a lot of people who wanted to leave Germany and Nazi-occupied countries couldn't. Maybe I overreacted this morning. I just . . . gah. I come from the same kind of family that you do, and was a little concerned that the test writer might have lost sight of the panic and horror and desperate choices faced by many people in that period.

Your Emotional Intuition score is a measure of how well you understand people, especially their unspoken needs and sympathies. A high score score usually indicates social grace and persuasiveness. A low score usually means you're good at Quake.
Your Scientific Intuition score tells you how in tune you are with the world around you; how well you understand your physical and intellectual environment. People with high scores here are apt to succeed in business and, of course, the sciences.

Date: 2005-08-12 09:56 pm (UTC)LOOK AT THE SMARTASS:
You are the Smartass! You are rational, extroverted, brutal, and arrogant. You probably consider people who are emotional and gentle to be big pussies who are obviously in lesser stature than you. You have many flaws, despite your seeming intelligence and cool-headedness. For instance, you aren't very nice. In fact, you're probably an asshole. And you are conceited and self-centered. Not only that, but you are very loud and vocal about all this, seeing as how you are extroverted. There is no better way to describe you than as a "smartass", I'm afraid. Perhaps just "ass" would do, too. But that's a little less literary and descriptive. At any rate, your main personality defect is the fact that you are self-centered, mean, uncaring, and brutally logical.
HE IS SO DRACO.
and he is me except extraverted. and he hates himself sekritly for being, too, an emotional pussy!
and the people hating him the most in fandom kind of sound like him, too, down to hating him for being a big pussy.

Date: 2005-08-11 04:50 am (UTC)In high school, my English teacher used to make us write weekly journal entries, and once, once of the questions she actually asked was, 'Do you think you would have been a Nazi?' I was like, that's crazy, of course I wouldn't have been! But the thing is, I have the benefit of hindsight, you know, and I can look back and say with conviction, yes, this was wrong, Hitler was evil. But just...having seen some documentaries with interviews of German citizens who remember that time, it seems a lot of them didn't actually know/understand/comprehend what was going on until it was 'too late to do anything', or that's what I remember one of them saying. (I don't know if that's true or just some sort of selective amnesia to block it out or whatever, though.) Anyway, I started wondering while I was watching that, would I have just stood idly by and let it happen? I hope not. I really, really hope not. I think the scary thing in all that is facing and owning up to that potential that we all have to be weak, to follow someone blindly because they 'sound like they know what they're talking about' (and more than that, but that's what I'm getting at for this scenario). I mean, I like to think I have good common sense, and can tell what's what, and I like to imagine that if I'd been a German citizen in the 30s/40s, I'd have been like, Hitler, WTF? Truth is, I don't know, and that scares me. (I don't really want to take the test, 'cause I'm worried it'll call me a bad person, haha.)
Oh, anyway. And then, I was watching another documentary a few months ago, which had interviewed a few of the men who were SS officers during WWII. It was really scary, because they were all such well-spoken, intelligent men, and they talked about how their duties started off small, you know--like, running inter-office documents (and of course they never questioned what the documents said, or anything). Then they got bigger tasks, and some of them started having doubts (maybe this dude's up to NO GOOD), but they just went blindly forward to get the job done; didn't think of what they might actually be doing. I mean, one of the men even said, 'Oh, but I'm a good person.' (He still believed that, years and years and years after the fact.) Another one talked about how his father (an officer too) had actually led people INTO THE GAS CHAMBER. He KNEW what he was doing. And. Until the day he died, he NEVER had any remorse because he didn't think he'd done anything wrong. I just. Cannot grasp that. I kept thinking, how could they do those things? How could they let themselves become that? You know? Because I definitely respect your view of taking responsibility for others, not just ourselves, and I was so mad that they could have been a part of something so terrible and never have thought they did something wrong. I mean, yeah, clearly they were brainwashed ('cause there's no doubt Hitler was very intelligent and his moves were all very calculated). BUT. For those men, I thought, YOU COULD HAVE STOPPED. You didn't have to be a part of it! It's a similar thing here about how I hope I could have been like, NO WAY, this is horribly, terribly wrong. And yet. This part, this is even scarier than owning up to my potential to be a blind sheep; this is owning up to my potential to do wrong; to hurt innocent people. I have that potential, just as I have the potential to do good, just as I have the potential to do any number of things.
That's why (going back to a lot of what you were saying) I definitely think that we, as empathetic human beings, have to be conscious of the world and not just ourselves; we HAVE to ask questions; we HAVE to have a solid belief of wrong and right, because if we don't, well.
Oh, man, Reena, you made me think! HOW COULD YOU MAKE ME THINK. ;) (Did I make any sense, haha?)

You like things edgy, subtle, and smart. I guess that means you're probably an intellectual, but don't take that to mean pretentious. You realize 'dumb' can be witty--after all isn't that the Simpsons' philosophy?--but rudeness for its own sake, 'gross-out' humor and most other things found in a fraternity leave you totally flat.
I guess you just have a more cerebral approach than most. You have the perfect mindset for a joke writer or staff writer.
Your sense of humor takes the most thought to appreciate, but it's also the best, in my opinion.
