I'm starting to twitch every time I see 'Blaise is Draco's best friend' plot-device. Twitch. Twitch. Twitch. Have to restrain myself from writing ficlet where Blaise dies gory death. Twitch.

Had a ficlet started mocking it, where Draco decided to be Blaise's best friend because he had no identity (easy to control!! muwahahahah!) & Pansy was pissing him off so he wanted to snub her. Alas, I was struck in the face with the odious job of creating a personality for Blaise (which makes me twitch). Don't mind giving Theo a personality, but then there's at least that hint that he's supposed to be too cunning to be part of Draco's gang, and I think that's utterly fascinating.

The lone wolf Slytherin. I could so see him kicking Draco's ass (not that I imagine this is difficult, all things considered.) But Blaise? Pure OC; this wouldn't bother me if he wasn't repeatedly made important, however (possibly I wouldn't mind if he was something less cliche than Draco's Slytherin-number-9418 Best Friend). I mean, it might be interesting if Blaise was like, the Remus of the Slytherins... in the background, agreeable but secretly thoughtful, something like that. Ahhh, but then I don't think Draco would mix well with a best friend who's too thoughtful.

Not that I don't like a Draco who's relatively well-adjusted and has several friends who he's close to and is happy as a clam in his Slytherin family (....er). Okay, fine, I admit it, I can't stand well-adjusted!Draco or really almost anyone; if those people indeed exist. And it's also annoying when well-adjusted!Draco has this casual comraderie with his pals, his buds, his Slytherin brothas-- all based on light sarcasm, their great bonding tool. *headdesk* Can't they have some sort of... complex system of back-stabbery and lies or something? That would be so nice. And yeah yeah, write it myself, I know. Le sigh. But I'm lazy; I just want to read a little something where Blaise is an ev0l-traitor-omg, maybe, or more likely Theo does something like go work for Percy. That would be so cool. A spy for the Ministry, yeay.

Actually, now I'm all intrigued-- imagining that Slytherins might get ahead based on some sort of Japanese system of unspoken rivalry disguised by shows of loyalty & some sort of honor. I don't care if it's canon, per se, I just suddenly find honorable-yet-devious!Slytherins rather cute. Possibly I'm suddenly having nostalgia for the Salazar-fic-that-never-was. Now there was a guy with honor/loyalty issues up the wazoo (in my head)....

And possibly I just wanted to mourn my Draco/Blaise fic (destroyed in a crash just now), though it was going absolutely nowhere. Draco needs a friend who's going to be not-so-rah-rah about the war, maybe, and not so important that he'd desert him if things get dicey; it might be interesting. Ahhh, why am I convincing myself to write D/best-friend!B, whywhywhy.... Literary masochism, thy name is Reena... -.-

I'm starting to twitch every time I see 'Blaise is Draco's best friend' plot-device.

Word.

But I think that's because in my head, Blaise is Muggleborn. And not necessarily teh lone wolf, but definitely an opportunist, cos he'd have to be not to be turned into a desklamp in the dungeons. I think I left a comment in one of Soda's entries about Blaise regarding this...

Can't they have some sort of... complex system of back-stabbery and lies or something?

Don't be stupid. They're teenage boys. They're not smart or subtle enough to do that. Even 40-something year old Slytherins are about as subtle as a brick wall falling on poor emo-CAPSLOCKOFTEENAGERAGEANDANGST!Harry.

I don't care if it's canon, per se, I just suddenly find honorable-yet-devious!Slytherins rather cute.

You just wanna turn them all into sickening little Gryffindors. *blech*

Now angsty fighting-for-Slytherin-Prince Draco/Nott would be nice. Though probably incestuous since I imagine Nott as a Pureblood, and therefore somehow related to Draco. He's like a slightly rattier, less-obsessed-with-Harry-and-more-destined-to-be-a-Death-Eater!Draco in my head, except Notty, obviously.

Heheh I meant Theo was the Lone Wolf :> Blaise just seems in the background, though really he has no personality in my mind at all, probably because I've avoided all fanon Blaises entirely, of if I've read them I've blocked it out, I dunno. As long as he has a personality, I'm fine. Um :>

Hahaha I totally didn't realize that back-stabbery thing made them sound too adult (that's what happens when you keep writing posts at 8am). My bad and duly noted :>

Though it's totally not true that I want to Gryffindorize anyone :P ahahah Especially since it'd be a totally different approach to honor, which I think Slytherins do have (in their way); more Japanese, less American or something.

Draco/Nott might be nice, yeah :D Especially if they didn't like each other :> Though I've written Nott only once (for my DE!Draco fic), and he basically is... really really nasty to Draco in it, so I can't help but slashing it that way, which that Draco reallyreally doesn't appreciate it, though I can't help but snicker at the idea :> I mean, he was a DE in that scenario but it didn't help because Nott was still smarter than him (& thus more successful, etc), so Draco resented him and Nott patronized him ^^; In... er, my fic. Which is the only Nott I've had any traffic with :> I'm curious as to whether you'd want to slash that Draco & Theo :>

Oh, don't be sorry about the adult thing. I just have a really low opinion of teenage boys. There are probably those that could pull off the subtle-bitchy-backstabbing things that teenage girls do (and more likely that they would be Slytherin), but not a lot.

I'm not sure about the Slytherin-honour thing. On one hand, as long as it suits their ambitions, a Slytherin would honour someone or something a lot. But is that really honour, if it gets dropped as soon as something better comes along?

And your Draco/Theo pairing sounds plausible. I mean, it's not hard to be smarter than Draco, and not all Death-Eating-children in Slytherin are dumb dolts, right?

Hah, and now it seems so obvious that that really does sound more like teenage -girls-, instead. I just meant I want them to not get along in some happy-sunshiny way. I want them to like, have those Slytherin-style jealousies and ambitions and envies, with some cliques that stuck together, but no great Slytherin solidarity & goodwill towards one's neighbors. Which possibly goes against the honor thing, except I think a code of honor could include desertion/betrayal as long as it was carried out systematically-- meaning, if it made sense, then I see honor as relative. But maybe that's just me.

Haha, the Draco & Theo I'm talking about are from an H/D fic, so it's not really a pairing, per se, I was just imagining counter-slashing my own fic, and it wouldn't really work at all and is really wrong in that context, which is probably why I can't help fiddling with it absent-mindedly. Plus I like my Theo, asshole that he is. Then again, I seem to like writing assholes ^^;
