reenkaAhhhhh, I'm having a bit of a spazz-attack because I randomly came across this gorgeous Tenipuri Fuji/Tezuka fanfic(!!) by Prufrock(!!!!), `Ozone'. *happy sigh* I've only read the first few paragraphs as of now and I'm all sighing blissfully, which is sort of scary, because reading doujinshi is one thing but reading fanfic (by authors you already know!) is serious business, or something.
I mean, slowly but surely, I've been falling out of touch with lj-fandomness in general... I am so lazy, and the H/D corner isn't what it used to be, and oh man, today I imagined a future where I take 2 semesters of Japanese and at this time next year I'm clumsily translating very basic Prince of Tennis doujinshis. Ahahahah how insane is that?? It can happen. Sort of. I already feel that weird itch to 'give something back' after just downloading/reading things for a few months. I think I'm not really cut out to be a lurker, which is actually rather odd since I'm such an antisocial freak, really, but.... Not as much of a freak as I could be, is what I keep thinking lately. ^^;;;
I've found some really good stuff as far as yaoi manga with actual plot goes recently, it seems. Two (count 'em!) sci-fi boy-love mangas, as in with plot but plot that's character-centered and probably more heavily allegorical than most hardcore sci-fi fans would be comfortable with. And it just occurs to me that I do tend to like more of the philosophical-type science fiction where you get the sort of extrapolation of possible changes in humanity just not possible in non-fantastic fiction, like in Isaac Asimov's and Theodore Sturgeon's stuff, and later with writers like Nancy Kress. Man, I'm so bitter about the tech-babble that dominates most sci-fi these days... argh... not to mention how deeply bitter (deeply, deeply bitter) I am about the sort of gash-and-slash intrigues that pass for 'plot' in most people's estimation....
Anyway, Tarako Kotobuki's `Sex Pistols' is really gorgeous old-style stuff... the sort of thing that makes you almost able to envision the world radically different because it makes sense in a freakish sort of way. That basic overwhelming wonder of 'what if'-- that's what I've always loved about science fiction. In this case, 'what if humans were just one of the subspecies of hominidae that exist, and they were unaware of the others because they're simply that dense'. The simplicity appeals to me; the widespread werecats and werewolves and werebears (...and so on) made vaguely plausible... that really appeals to me. And it's wickedly funny, a bit mad, kind of romantic and fast paced. There are also cat-boys and mpreg. I love this manga so much <3<3<3
Speaking of old-style sci-fi (by which I mean the 50's-60's style, generally), Riyu Yamakami's `Love is Your Name' was a really surprising find, though I like all her stuff except for `Deep Flower' (which deserves its own rant about how co-dependency can easily be taken to such an extreme that it becomes a story about self-imprisonment). It reminds me of the original Star Trek, where there were apparently tons of uber-powerful bodyless beings which sometimes took over human bodies, especially when near death... eheheh. I didn't realize I'd missed that ^^;; I love the theme of an innocent (robot, super-powerful psychic force, what have you!) discovering what human emotions are (wub! twue wub!). Awwwwww. And of course the human companion also discovering himself and dealing with his past-- the usual, of course, but somehow I never grow tired of this theme. We are all strangers in a strange land, ne?

Heh, I like my SF yaoi to be pointless and full of cute engineered species/robots, ala Kawaii Gatte. Yay! The future is all about nekoboys, I'm sure of it.

It's really fast-paced to start with, and one just breezes through it. The expressions she draws can also be rather priceless. Plus, Sex Pistols does have neko boy <3<3<3 And a wolf-boy. And other animals ^^;;;

I think the thing that makes me lump Clark and Asimov together is the sort of coldness of a lot of their stories. Whilst they try to tackle aspects of human behavior, they do it in a very analytical way, be it scientific or philosophical way. I guess I just prefer the style of the dirtier SF as opposed to deep analysis of the human experience. I'm so uncouth. XD

Honestly, I don't really read hard sci-fi, I just listed Isaac 'cause he exemplifies the idealism & philosophy behind the 60's-style work that inspired people in those directions, I guess. I love it when things are both philosophical and intimate. That's why I really liked `Love is Your Name' ^^;;
