(quiz meta. yes, I've sunk that low.)
Apr. 28th, 2005 11:44 pmAhahah, this is the blurb for the 'Draco' result in the silly quiz for the Hogwarts male I'm supposedly most compatible with (Oliver, because clearly he's the most obsessive): "Spoiled by his father, this is a boy used to getting exactly what he wants-- including you. He'll demand everything he wishes of you, and you do it gladly because his blond aristocraticness and arrogant nature is like Viagra to you. If you don't do as you're told, you'll be punished-- possibly just what you are wanting, so expect to be spanked once in a while, submissive minx!"
Now... I quoted all this (not just) to make everyone feel my pain, I promise! Though normally I would rage and vow to myself to finally start that Holy War against top!Draco once and for all... I realized that really, this blurb contains an important clue for the... rather odd way of thinking that produces that frightening beast. Yes, a clue!
Everything seems to follow from the first statement, that he's "a boy used to getting exactly what he wants". And then something dinged! in my head-- because isn't it obvious that's the exact opposite of the truth? I mean... that may be the root disagreement between the top & bottom!Draco fanciers! Is it possible? Perhaps we of the bottom persuasion believe that of course Draco had never gotten what he wanted ever since he started Hogwarts-- meaning, those small things like getting on the Quidditch team in second year cannot compare to continuously losing in Quidditch against Potter, and Slytherin always losing the House Cup, and Harry basically humiliating him personally at the end of fourth and fifth years, and so on. How can you say that Draco's being coddled at home at times (and even this isn't constant, as the Borgin and Burkes scene shows) completely overwhelms his at-school experiences?
Basically, perhaps we of the bottom persuasion (yes, I like saying that) see Draco's arrogance as a put-on, because the facts of his life show that he doesn't really have it easy-- though he could have, if he weren't so ambitious and obsessed with being on top. But then, he wouldn't be so obsessed if he actually was on top, right, or conversely if he was any good at attaining said position of dominance.
Actually, no, I take all of this back-- there's no real room for 'disagreement' in this scenario-- it's unavoidable that any vision of pure spoiled-and-arrogant-aristocrat!Draco is AU, something that might have been true if Harry didn't exist and a large chunk of canon never happened. And I'd say, well-- fine, someone can be sexually dominant especially because they're such a loser in their real life, but then it seems a lot of people who like top!Draco believe that his arrogance and spoiledness are what makes him that way...? I'm not sure if it's even possible to honestly see actual canon this way; I'm confused. My first instinct is to say, no, it's impossible, Draco is too obviously a bad guy that gets his all the time-- so how can you see him as being on top of his game? Er?
Really, I suspect I'm miffed partly 'cause I think that quiz secretly wanted to tell me Draco's my ideal sexual partner, ahahah, 'cause who's the most obsessed boy in Hogwarts??
Lemme tell ya, it's not Oliver Wood. (Though I think Harry gives Draco a run for his money where Voldemort and his parents are concerned, but let's just not go there....)
