So I went to the "Row M" line-party thingie with about 300 (or so?) HP nuts like myself. *moment of reverent silence*
...I had a lot of fun. Well, that's an understatement. I think I squeed myself into a tizzy, and I don't generally do that in public, but. I'm really just a big dork (though of course that's obvious, isn't it). But.
Anyway, I'm going to see it again in IMAX, and if anyone else who reads this is going, tell me, tell me! Aaaack, tell meeeee..!...!..!! I desperately need to talk about the movie in person now, since I didn't get to do that even though there were a lot of HP fans around. I'm just shy & don't deal well with large groups, even though I said hi to
vlamidala &
ali_wildgoose. Well, actually, I sat next to Ali, eheheh. But I was late to that actual "party" part of the event, and the rabid fangirl screaming isn't my thing anyway. So! Someone! Anyone! NYC people! I wanna taaaaaaalk...!..!..!! heh.
Um. But just seeing people dressed in schoolgirl outfits and someone dressed up as Professor Trelawney (...yeah) and the life-size brooms and the whole geekery made my heart all warm and fuzzy. I love youfreaks guys, I really do :D People were definitely staring at the procession of us from the party to the movie theatre funny, and I was like, yeay! We're freaks! Muggle freaks in large numbers walking through mid-Manhattan! Woo! ...um.
I just brought my Harry plushie, and I was kinda cuddling him on the way to the party, trying to get a reaction from the passerby, but these are New Yorkers, so it's not that easy, eheh. I'd feel rather silly in a costume, though, so it's great to be associated with but not actually -one of- the dressed up people. Whee!
Anyway. *happy sigh* Even though I didn't -do- any of the raffle/trivia/mingling things, I felt a part of something wonderful, and I have that love-you-all vibe going on right now that I had at Nimbus. I really feel like I -belong- with... the fandom. Like... I dunno. The silly t-shirts (eheheh, I loved the little cartoon of Remus and the H/D one and the Ron one... eeee, Ron!!1) and the funny hats and. Oh. Just, the love. Knowing the people next to me feel it too-- it's priceless. Made the movie-watching much more fun & emotional. Y'know, not too much screaming and yet some well-placed tasteful screaming at Draco & Snape and such. It's all good. :D
Did I mention I love you all? I love you all <33333
And so, see y'all on Saturday. Or hopefully at least someone :>
To say I loved it would be an understatement, heheh. I was continuously squeeing with delight (albeit silently, when I wasn't clapping with the others). All in all, I am of course not entirely capable of objective judgement, as I am horribly single-minded. This movie was totally about Harry, to me (and his grand eternal "thing" with Malfoy, eheheh). Well, and all that stuff about Sirius, too :>
Draco was great, man. Oh, and Harry's angry growl at aunt Marge! The boy radiates self-righteous anger beautifully. I was like, WAH YES. He was just -intense-. And that determined fearless look! The growly voice Dan has helps things a lot, I think.
Tom's Draco is such a ham! I really love silly little movie!Draco <3 heee :D He's such a dork! And look! His repertoire has expanded! No eyebrows!! *wiggle wiggle* He's like, the hammiest of hams in hamsterdom and I was thinking "canon!Draco"!!1!11 the whole time! I was like, eeeeeee! He's so anti-smooth and wacky! Heeee! Um. yeah, okay, so he's not the most believable of supposed "school rivals", but I just loved the sheer sparkle of him. Tom really does seem to take so much pleasure in being Draco, it's great.
The little bits I knew of that I thought would turn me off (the silly Muggle clothes, the Hermione punch, Draco's paper crane) all fit beautifully & the little cartoon Draco drew just killed me dead. TRUE LOVE!!1 eheheh. Omg, no, seriously. DUDE. <3333Alfonso<3333333 And Harry was so deadpan, ahahahah. Like, "......." heee!!
The S/R hug wasn't long enough (kinda blink-and-it's-done), though the marriage comment killed me (and lo, the fangirls squeal). Alan Rickman's voice continues to be Teh Sex, OMG(!!1) of course.
I thought the werewolf looked weirdly designed, like-- unrealistic, or something, but the hippogriff flight was bloody fantastic. Woo!!1 I was getting shivers like mad-- it was just a beautiful, beautiful perfect sequence. I loved how much Harry took child-like joy in flying in this movie. Not Quidditch, but -flying-. Like, maybe it's a metaphor for the whole 'freedom' theme in PoA, but anyway. Yeah. <3Alfonso<3 Harry, Harry, Harry. He seemed really happy and I just melted.
Draco was being flirty, I swear to god, not even slightly belligerent, heheh, but it's cute 'cause see, Harry's perception is the same; interesting directing choice I thought. Like... the Slytherins seem rather sympathetic.
Lupin was okay; he wasn't charming, but his quiet demeanor is more canon, isn't it? And he was good when he was teaching the kids, I thought-- he really shined in the boggart scene, eheheh. Ron rocked my socks this movie. <3Rupert<3
Rupert is getting loads better, but I think they all are :D
Harry has such presence, man. Mmmmmm. And the Ron/Hermione bits are -so- adorable (teehee!!) And blatant!! Surprisingly, I really liked the way the Harry&Hermione partnership-type dynamic played out this movie a lot.
Hagrid wasn't as annoying as in CoS-- not at all, really; the Buckbeak scene was Draco's shining moment this time, I thought. So canon!! :D The animation & humor this kid has is yummy. Aww :D
I thought Harry's relationship with Sirius was pretty believable; Sirius seemed... nicely understated yet crazed, and their mutual desperation really showed through, I thought. Wah!
I thought how Remus acted around Sirius was a little... weird? Off? But the scuffling...? OMG SEX!!1 >:O
He just changed demeanor in a weird way. I'd expect there to be more depth and conflictedness there on Remus' part; not to just start being back-to-back in sidekick mode immediately. It seemed... hard to understand/follow if you haven't read the book, I guess. Like, whuh--?
Snape's reaction to them in that scene, on the other hand, was totally spot-on. I adored how juvenile he acted. It was a delight to see him act so insecure and flustered. And the way Harry told him to lower his wand, in the corridor? OMG SEX!!1 (there's a lot of the ho-yay in this movie, I swear. There really really is!!)
In fact, Alan Rickman was so virtually purring at Harry it was... just... whoa. I mean, Sirius & Remus were way more emotionally distant in PoA than Snape & Draco, heh.
Mmm, masterful!Harry. Omg, he's just-- *cough* Um. Yeah. I mean, the crying scene was really off and weird, but Dan really channeled Harry's anger and lostness well this movie, I thought. Just... there's -power- in him. *siiiigh* That's why the weird childish crying thing seemed weird. But I can see why they wrote it in, it's just that it didn't work with Dan. But Hermione reaching for Harry in that scene was... more emotionally impactful than the crying, I thought. Wah, HARRY. :((
I felt so wibbly seeing that swing, in the beginning, too-- it's almost certainly the one from OoTP. Wah!! Made me clutch my Harry plushie, just like during the (really rather good) Patronus scene. Whoa, shivers. *siiigh* It's just, those parts in PoA seem so poignant & bittersweet now. WAH.
Hee, and the Knight Bus? So great. The set designs were all wonderfully quaint yet realistic & true to the spirit of the book, I thought.
I... I love Harry Potter too much to express, man. I was like -high- on it all. And I love this fandom. OMG, you bunch offreaks wacky wacky people :D :D <3333 *cries*
I'm so needing to see it again right now. I can't wait for GoF already :D

re: the crying and I finally saw the movie and am babbling
Date: 2004-06-04 10:35 pm (UTC)OMG I loved the movie!!
Pacing was a bit weird, but I felt like most of the faults of the movie were faults of the book and to "fix" it, you'd need to just completely rewrite the book.
Dude. Draco. So crushing. At the 1st feast he so sits there just to taunt Harry.
Remus. Yes. Much more canon. He isn't gentle and touchy-feel-y. And his change of heart was a bit awkward in the book too, so I'll be forgiving of it in the movie.
I could see that this movie might seem disjointed to someone who didn't know the backstory, but it was a wonderful tribute to the book. So pretty. And the clocks! And the ticking during the time-turner scene! And Hermione hitting Harry's hand during the time-turner scene! <333 And the pinstriped robes of Fudge! And "I'm head boy you know." And "does my hair really look like that from the back?" And Harry loving to fly. And Sirius loving it too, and Hermione not loving it. And Hagrid actually touching me with his love for animals, rather than annoying me. And Harry being a little angry and strange and caught up in events rather than being rewritten to be "standard boy hero."
ok. babbling with happy. Stopping now. ^^;;
Re: the crying and I finally saw the movie and am babbling
Date: 2004-06-05 09:20 pm (UTC)I totally dig that stuff, yeah. I want someone to squeeeee with, like, in person, 'cause it's just not the same on lj y'know, like. Yeah. I've talked to Sister Magpie but she hadn't seen it yet & I never actually talked about the movie when I saw Aja today, and. And. Yes!!
I know, I was relieved he was actually not crying, but it was still weird/awkward, just like the Harry-latching-on-to-Hermione-latching-on-to-Ron was awkward too, but. It didn't really hurt my enjoyment, just little weird bits, y'know, that I noticed. After the second showing, I'm still "...eh" about Remus, but Sirius is SO GOOD and Harry is like, WAH ADORABLENESS and. Yeah.
I totally want to babble about it but am overwhelmed too. I'm like, still in that stage where everything about it makes me squee, pretty much (though it wasn't as protracted with the second movie, and virtually not there with the first), but I can like, be critical if I'm pushed. I sort of feel like I -should- be critical to be true to my meta roots or something ^^;
hee. I spent this whole second showing noticing things differently and yet they were the same things, I just paid attention differently maybe, and it's just so cool 'cause there's stuff to pay attention to. And yeah. *grins madly* I could definitely babble on and on about it, though it does kinda all fade into a happy haze in my head, too~:)
Re: the crying and I finally saw the movie and am babbling
Date: 2004-06-06 02:53 am (UTC)Yeah, I can kinda "explain it away," but inside I just wish they'd done another take.
And I actually got a big kick out of Hermione throwing herself into Ron's arms and Harry trying all awkwardly to make it a group hug/grope her. Not really too canon (Harry's not a touchy-feely type guy), but it made me smile for how guy-ish it was. Like, you know Radcliffe just wanted to cop a feel.
I'm not up for a review, but I might make a list of "things about PoA I noticed." Lame, but, hey.
