Mmmm... few things make me happier than the pretty. Had to share. *bounce*

Firstly, I was looking around [livejournal.com profile] starlettegurly's website for this pic of DV!Harry&Draco lying blissfully on the grass (heeeeee). I mean, I like her stuff well enough, usually, but oh man, has she improved. She's been doing more realistic softer-colored stuff more recently, without the Elfquest-style eyes and such. And. And. OMG!!1

*breathes*

She's illustrated Harry & Draco's fight scene from OoTP!!1!!!11

It. Is. So. Hot. I am. Dead. Dead. DEAD.

Harry looks. Omg. Scary. I have no words. He's just. OMG!!1 He looks like he could kill him. This shouldn't send me into ecstasy, but. Well. Yeah. I can stare at this thing all day. So wrong, but. Just. Okay, it's just wrong. I have to keep telling myself that. No words, man. No words.....mmmm......

But! That page has a link to the OoTP Art-fest, which is full of people's submissions for chapter-based illustrations. And. Wah. Do I need to say more? There's enough angry!Harry here to set my mind on fire. Like this, for instance (!!1) and omg, [livejournal.com profile] glockgal did the Umbridge detention scene, and, um. Wah.

*dead*

Have you seen her new Rhysenn? (http://www.livejournal.com/community/hpart/155668.html#cutid1)

yes, buuuut. her coloring = eh on that one. i liked it better uncolored. the pic is over-rich and the dress swallows the girl. i actually don't like most of her older work either, like i said, because while it's stylistically pretty (i suppose), it lacks a certain emotionality, i feel, to the point where the people look like dolls. this rhysenn especially looks porcelain-like-- all gleaming and perfectly painted. the heavy-handed approach doesn't tend to work for me in cgi, though i can maybe appreciate it in oil or acrylic, and even there, i'll usually prefer a lighter, more gentle coloring. my favorite medium is watercolor, so that should tell you something :>

mmmm. I really like that Rhysenn though... I think the heavy-handed approach works really well with Rhysenn as a character, since in many ways, she does seem like a doll. But maybe that's just me. *oogles all the pretty art*

You're right though. Watercolor rocks.

i think i'm just uber-picky with coloring. like... i'll worship you if you color in a style i can appreciate, and turn up my nose if you don't, more than any other aspect of art except maybe subject-matter, heh (that is to say, some subject-matter... like, say, harry&draco kissing-- will have me squealing at a lot of crap, heh). my recent discovery in terms of coloring has been [livejournal.com profile] lunulet.... oh man (http://www.livejournal.com/users/lunulet/8179.html#cutid1). though my favorite pic of hers is still this (http://www.livejournal.com/users/lunulet/2331.html#cutid1). gah. so yeah, uh. i'm all about the wispy, man. bring on the wispy!! ahahah. stubborn about it, too ><;;
although i actually like starlette's coloring most of the time-- usually it's much dreamier and stuff. the thing i've always liked about her style was always coloring, 'cause her faces all looked a bit too alike for my tastes, though like i said, lately she's really improved, and her recent OoTP pics are just stellar.

my favorite recent comic-style colorists are david mack (!!<33333 omg if you don't know him, go find `kabuki' and EAT IT ALIVE) and chris bachalo's work, especially in neil gaiman's death mini-series and mmmmm, the alice cooper mini-series. *siiiiigh*

also, BlackCat's coloring (*points at icon*).... mmmm....

Ah, well. It's the sense of movement, in fact, that I liked about this one. Perhaps because I am n00bish enough that flowing hair = movement. :) My one qualm was that it seems too pretty for Rhysenn, whose nasty qualities always balance out her victim-potential, in my opinion.
