Actually, you know what's interesting is that the viewers weren't SUPPOSED to like Buffy and Spike together. The writers intended the relationship to be seen as dysfunctional and harmful and Spike beneath her, ect, ect. One of them complained in interviews that all fans of Buffy&Spike are sick in the head and are the type to write love letters to jailed serial killers. heh.
To which I say, how can you NOT see why we'd love them? You wrote those SCENES. You had him say THOSE WORDS?
But then, there is a huge section of fans who DO agree about the above and are quite bitter about Season 6.
But yeah, they finally did the whole attempted rape thing, in my opinion, to say, "ha! see! He WAS bad all along! See? SEE?!" They could have chosen any of a number of ways to get Spike to ask for his soul, but they picked that one.
