i'm starting to be bothered by this whole "issue" within the fandom itself (and by this i mean people who write/read hp fanfic), with underage sex. it seems hypocritical. i mean, once you get into slash/yaoi, you're going to have to go out of your way to completely avoid underage sex-- you're going to have to stick with those gun-toting drama shows.

so why do people keep bringing it up? "oh hp is all about underage sex and incest" *laughs* yeah. so? so are 80% of the other fandoms. clark isn't of age either, and no one's going on about -that-. and these characters are most often slashed with people exactly of age with them, too. it's not just snape/harry people have a problem with. it's almost like-- there are some things that are "ok" and some things that aren't, but considering we read lucius/draco and fred/george without even burping, i don't see what's so scandalous about them all being 16. it's like we need that last remaining bit of propriety to seem like we're really not perverts, we're just "enlightened in the ways of boy-on-boy lurve, which is natural and beautiful", blah blah. it's like-- are we (slash fans, hp fans, whatever) all so old, now, that we get to speak of people several years younger as "underage" and "icky" in relation to sex? what the hell?
     *sigh* doesn't really matter. just kinda silly though.

Here, here. When people freak out about underage sex, I just don't understand it. Are they living in the real world? How old was Juliet, people? And Romeo? And several people in my grade seven class? Those little girls enjoying themselves with the vibrating Nimbus 2000 toy? Sex is sex. To a certain extent, I think that some people shy away from HP underage, because they're afraid that the backlash from the religious right will only get worse if they get their pristine, virgin/missionary little hands on H/D 16 year old lurve. But really, what's the worst they can do? Complain adamently until one of the largest sites for HP fanfic decides to delete all the offensive material? Right, cuz that will make the problem go away....

I don't get it either. The only reason I can see that people go after HP for the statuatory/consent issues moreso than other fanfic is because in many peoples' eyes, HP is targeted at pre-pubescents, whereas Dawson's Creek and Smallville and so on are targeted at teens.

But either way, I certainly was thinking about it way before the age of consent. I definitely was doing things before the age of consent, both with people my age and with people much older. This is reality. Teens have hormones. Deal with it. Should we avoid realism in the stories we write just to satiate the religious right?

I often think that the senators that object so strongly do so for the same reasons that the homophobic are so repulsed; they are afraid they see the potential in themselves...

well, um, yeah, but it's not so surprising, as far as the religious right goes. i was really thinking/being surprised more at people -within the fandom-, who had issues with the characters being underage (in their minds, 15 is not ok, but 17 is ok or whatever.)

i guess i wasn't clear, again ^^;;

i mean people like shalott, who write `weather of the heart' but are squicked by the underageness of it and make 'em 18 or 17 or whatever. *kick self* i'm never clear, it seems...

maybe some people just aren't comfortable with people having sex at young ages. Some people do, some people don't. If you've never met anyone who's had sex at a young age, then it can seem like no one really does it when they're young. It doesn't really make sense, though, since about 60% of teens have had sex by the age of 18, and not allll off them had it in the year before they turned 18, so logically, some people have sex at young ages. Yes. I don't understand it, either.
