Re: the 12983348th attempt to ask the eternal question of whether it's polite to do concrit on, in this case, holiday fics, I mostly agree with this comment (....heh... *cough*) about 'finding your own truth' in a request-- in theory, yeah. (In practice, I've only left two reviews and they were both a total squee, 'cause I don't actually comment if I don't like it, and in fact I generally don't comment even if I do like it.) Theoretically though, if you don't 'find your own truth', it's the equivalent of bad porn no matter how you slice it (or, to quote directly, "a cobbled together clip show", ahahahahafiklajhskjfhas). Man.
    But this gets into my general issues with writing stuff on command (like, sometimes it works out great & is an inspiration, but most of the time I'd probably want to beat my head in because of the sheer impossibility of writing what someone asked & still retain my dignity/self-respect... I like a good challenge, though). People said you shouldn't critique -because- it was written on command so you're really critiquing the requester's kinks, but... really, why would one write something one thought was stupid? I tried once (with an old cross-dressing fic) and do not care to do so again -.-

What it really made me think of is the somewhat interesting split here between 'Art' for the sake of Art and social ethics, especially the whole gift culture thing . . .

I love writing fics as gifts, though mostly not with specific prompts; I mean, knowing the person somewhat, I know he wasn't thinking of ethics at all, not really, so it's easy to say 'Art is more important'. I've yet to see someone comment who equally values both Art and Ethics rather than falling bluntly & definitively on one side or the other; I think it would quite interesting to see the rationalization either way. A part of me thinks that in some ways the two ideals are incompatible-- because one is all about challenging the status-quo, putting the art before the artist -or- the public, whereas the other is basically the complete opposite.

    Though I have to say in this case, the whole debate seems pointless and silly 'cause it boils down to a simple Miss Manners-type lesson: now now, don't misuse others' toys, children. It's not some deeper meta question one should think about it simply because whatever the meta answer is, it's irrelevant in practice; it's a simple societal reflex, and either you care about being rude or you don't. (...if anyone cares, my take is that I don't want to offend people because I don't want to -deal- with people. Secondarily, of course, I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings or be a bother because generally I don't think it's worth it & also I hate conflict and arguing and being in the spotlight and cheese... okay, not cheese. Point is, this is my emotional make-up, not my moral code I shall now rain down upon you all. ...I have also henceforth decided that I disagree with EVERYONE simply because they're prescribing behavior either way which, to me & in my personal code of ethics, is RUDE. ha!)
    So basically what you get is a bunch of people giving you their personal take on manners & the importance (or lack) thereof... which to me is about as enlightening as watching paint dry (in other words: why should I care again? oh wait, I guess it could be that if enough people disapprove, this should be construed as 'peer pressure'... which, I'm sorry, just MAKES ME WANT TO DO IT, okay) :> Though sort of worthwhile if there were enough people to do a sociological study, maybe :-?

...One of these days, metafandom will shock me and someone'll come up with something REALLY NEW & DIFFERENT to talk about. Or at least amusing. Until then, I'll be over here, beating my head against the wall watching straight boys lick each other :D :D
    (Although the real problem is that it's easier to comment on things you've thought about 1918309348093 times before and don't actually need to make an effort to write about. *sigh*)
    I really liked thelana's post on [not] rereading/rewatching things-- I don't either, though my memory's not -that- reliable that I remember the general plot every episode of something I enjoyed. Generally I just get everything I was going to get from an experience/book the first time, and I don't stay interested if I start reading 'cause it comes back to me as I go, and my sense of 'must find out what happens' is 0, and most stories aren't good enough to enjoy even knowing what happens. I do sometimes 'dip in' to my favorite parts, especially with comics or books I love a lot, so much that I sort of remember where the good parts are. I can just read a few paragraphs or pages and it'll come back to me fresh, whereas I'll only have a vague recollection if I didn't remind myself at all. Um, not like this is really of any use to anyone or all that interesting, but. ^^;

I also love these hilarious (...yet disturbingly hot) bodice-ripper covers <3<3<3<3 ...Or should that be crotch-ripper??

As for metafandom, I notice they seem really good about picking up the links that people give them, so if you do see something different/new, you should point it out to them so it can be covered. But, I think it's going to be the same topics unless something changes in the area of coverage.

Hehe I wind up rewatching things 'cause they come on or someone else wants to watch, and especially with cheesy fantasy movies (...like Star Wars & Rocky Horror, but Monty Python also counts), there's something to be said for knowing exactly where every silly line goes :D I'm not a fan of doing that alone, but if someone's with me, it's fun to me like 'BURRRRN! NOT AGAIN!' :D I rarely have the TV on as background though, 'cause it's too distracting... anytime even the news are on (and I've heard that news clip 1209280439 times already), I have to pay attention at least a little and my multi-tasking skillz are... uh.... notsogood -.-;;;

I know, right? What bugs me is the lack of self-awareness or any interest in meta (in some of these people) before jumping in as if -naturally- they have something of interest to say. Yeah, right. *cough*

Hmm, well... I mean, I rely on metafandom in the first place? I mean, I do surf randomly, but fact is that most people in general don't do meta, so the odds of finding it randomly if you're not someone with a large flist and at least several fandoms intermixing are sort of low. I don't even mind the same topics so much as the exact same -debates- on the exact same topics, ahahah. And then the same comments on the same debates on the same topics. Well, I suppose that in itself is amusing :>
