(sour grapes?!)
Jul. 27th, 2005 03:08 amWhat I really don't know is why I click on links that basically say 'why fanon!Harry is better than canon!Harry'. Is it because I enjoy the beautiful little tingle of rage in my toes? I'm not sure. :-?
It's not necessarily that it's -Harry-, either, or that I hate fanon!Harry (...well, I don't love him, and can't think of a single truly brilliant instance, but whatevers). It's that whole 'but I'll just take the version I like and love it and hate the original' that drives me utterly insane. It's totally a slap to the face of like... writerly/readerly honesty? Artistic integrity? Something like that.
Hm, of course this enters into the whole 'purposefully ignoring canon' vs. 'manipulating canon' (for a real reason) debate, which is old as fandom. Generally, I personally am okay with many shady things being done (hopefully while retaining some vital connection to canon characterization-- throw me a bone there, fanfic writer-person) in the name of a good story (...given it's a good story), it's just... a pet peeve when a writer or a reader knowingly chooses the version of even fictional reality they like best for no reason other than 'well, this annoys me less'. I mean, there's escapism... and then there's chasing the illusion.
Actually, that's what drives me up the wall with all character-bashing, no matter if I love the character or not. You always have people say 'but this stuff the character did is so annoying and rude and immature, therefore omg they SUCK and must DIE'.
I just honestly don't know what to even say anymore except something like "...I'm really glad I'm not your friend. No, really, thank you."
Because... dude...wtf? How can a person seriously be judged wholesale as 'annoying and rude' as if that summed them up? Whuh--? I mean, mebbe if you don't wanna give the character or person much thought & they just bumped into you in the supermarket and you're like, 'tchh' and go on your way. But to actually waste thought-space on pondering how deeply 'immature' & 'annoying' someone is as if that made you justified? I mean, I can see feeling that, but -thinking- that? That's seriously so unempathic it hurts my head, and not in a hot sort of brutal way like Harry has (shut up! ...okay fine... this is really Harry's reaction type to Malfoy in a nutshell).
Okay, I can step back & find it amusing, the way people's reasons are like, 'but this version of a character is more annoying'. That's what really gets to me. It's like, the way people always go for the less annoying. I'm really really 'wtf' about that; I mean, granted, one of my fave characters in HP is Draco and he's... he's... really bloody annoying. So I've no sympathy for the 'annoying' bit at all. I'm like, ahahahah you think you know annoying??! Well, what about the times when the annoying characters set up camp in your head & keep whining whenever they're not humping each other's legs? Yeah, thass righ'. You're just wusses. Yep.
Sometimes I think I just relate to people & characters in an, I dunno, unusual way or something. I definitely find some people annoying but I don't... I don't see myself justifying it and giving it the weight of 'but the person -is- that way'-- it'd just be that's my reaction, period. Otherwise, it's just so... so damned wanky, god.
