(...aaaand, it's feed-Reena's-ego time!)
Nov. 15th, 2004 08:33 pmAhahah, what the hell. I like to think I'm 'not this sort of girl', but really, isn't everyone? Some of us just are more easily embarrassed than others. I think my sense of shame kind of comes and goes. But mostly goes. Far far away.

Reading
natlyn's post on different kinds of fen, it occurs to me that part of the reason I find it difficult to find/get into a new fandom from the plethora that are out there is that are out there is that I'm just not a media fan-- that is, it's not precisely natural to me to watch a TV show in progress and want to read fic for it. I mean, I'm much more likely to get into a movie (or a book) fandom, or a fandom for a show that's long over (and I can't watch now if I hadn't then), because I'd already have a sort of... set canon which wouldn't be constantly... in my face, I guess?
I realize I was talking about the process of putting the canon 'out of one's mind' when dealing with fanfic (and fanon), but of course you can't do that in the (great majority) of fandoms where the canon is constantly changing and current.
And I really wonder if the fics written for these fandoms and the typical fannish relationship with the canon are just-- different. My intuition says they are. It'd be more like participating, then, wouldn't it? Any desire to really subvert the canon would take a different route if you had new canon to contradict you every week. It's just really odd to realize how... unique this situation is, with a canon that feels solid for several years, but isn't. Like, there's time for a rift to set in-- time for things to be twisted and misplaced and remade into fanon that's able to contest its source in the fen's minds.
So now I'm wondering if this sort of... mental separation of the canon from the slash/fic-reading is because a lot of fandom's canon sources kind of... suck otherwise. I myself could never get into most fandoms 'cause I can't bear to see a whole show's worth of material (that's... many many viewing hours) just for the slashy bits. And neither could I even read 1 book just for the sake of slash, because my attention span is just that fickle. So if I am going to get into a show-- I'm unlikely to ship a slash pairing unless the character has no other close canon relationship I like in the slightest. Like in the LoTR movies, say-- it's blissfully easy to ship Merry/Pippin because it's close enough to canon-- but I didn't need to read slash because the canon was satisfying enough, which tends to happen with movies & shows I really like.
Anyway, that post kind of placed my main point here in a larger, or at least more coherent, context-- of media fan --> fic fan (and I'm pretty close to the slash end of things with the gen --> slash spectrum, but only in fandoms where I'm a not into the media/canon). I mean, it's a spectrum, not an either/or-- I didn't really mean to imply that it was an either/or, just that they're opposite sides. Yes.
This is, btw, why I often say that I'm just not a fan of -any- media, if by 'fan' you mean someone who sees a show or reads a book, loves it, and therefore needs to engage in fannish 'activities' like ficcing or vidding or going to cons.

cordelia_v's Snape vs. Spock comparison essay pretty much kills me. I mean, I know I always said that if I had a 'type' within the Potterverse it'd be Snape, and omg, I did always know that there's -something- familiar there, but to equate him to Spock directly just makes me titter madly. Mind you, this is someone who's had a mammoth, 3-4 year crush on Spock throughout High School. Imagining having a crush of that caliber on Snape makes me... wig out. I mean... I won't even say how far it went, because it's just that embarrassing.
The only problem as I see it is that Snape's only logical when it suits him, which makes him an impostor. An impostor, I say!

Date: 2004-11-15 06:20 pm (UTC)Right after you friended me.
2. Why did you first "friend" me?
I'm often really stupid about friending so for some reason feel nervous about doing it, though of course I never feel any of the negative things I imagine somebody might think about me if I friend them. Anyway, so that's why I was all excited and then tried to oh-so-casually friend you back after a bit...cause I'd already wanted to.
3. What posts of mine do you like to read the best?
I think I like 'em all! Of course I love the H/D, but I loved your most recent R/S as well and that's not even a pairing I read. I also like anything on fairy tales and growing up and learning to, you know, relate to the world.
4. What would you like me to write about that I don't?
??? Whatever you write about next.
5. Do you think we would be friends in real life?
I think we are too.:-)
6. How often do you read my journal?
When you post.
7. What do we have in common?
Lots. HP, of course, and I think a way of looking at things, fictional and non-fictional, and dance and yay--fairy tales.
8. Will you post this in your journal so I can answer?
Done.
9. If I were an HP character, who would I be?
The love child of Luna and Zacharias Smith.

Date: 2004-11-15 07:17 pm (UTC)I think it was after I'd seen you make some funny/interesting comments in malafede's LJ, and when I snooped over here I found smut, and the rest was history.
2. Why did you first "friend" me?
Er...I'm jumping ahead, aren't I? See question 1.
3. What posts of mine do you like to read the best?
See question 1. Hahaha. Actually I find most of what you write interesting. I do like the fic the best, though.
4. What would you like me to write about that I don't?
How your H/D love is returned fresh and new and better than ever. And with lots of plot bunnies.
5. Do you think we would be friends in real life?
Yes, if only so I could pop that never-been-drunk-cherry of yours.
6. How often do you read my journal?
Whenever you pop up on my friends list. :D
7. What do we have in common?
An OTP and a general disenchantment with much of the world, I think. Or, a love/hate relationship with the world. Or, just the people in it, maybe.
8. Will you post this in your journal so I can answer?
No. But you can answer here if you like. :D
9. If I were an HP character, who would I be?
Luna Lovegood.

Date: 2004-11-15 07:35 pm (UTC)Hum. I feel my ego properly soothed & massaged already >:D See, it -was- worth it :> I definitely want to try a Chocolate Orgasm for my first drunken-floozy experience. Mmmm yes chocolate makes it all all right :>
Okay I'll done one:
1) I'd stolen across your lj when you first started posting the rentboy!Draco (as I shall always think of it), and while I wanted to keep up with it, you said you lock all your personal posts (which you don't actually make that many of!) so I was like, 'ohh, this must be one of those uber-prolific people with non-fannish content but they sometimes post fic). And then you friended me and like, actually talked to me (which doesn't actually happen that much with most people who friend me), I thought, what the hell, you're really cute and also write porn. :>
2) ...I think I jumped also. ^^;;
3) I like the way you talk about things. Like. I'm trying not to say 'cute', but like-- engaging. Sort of snarky but in a... okay, fine, cute way. But probably I like the porn best because we're on the same frequency with that, so to speak.
4) How you've decided to write S/R porn to become the uber-super popular bi-pairing goddess ;)) Okay, no, but if you just posted more that'd be good too :>
5) Almost definitely. Mostly because er... I'm not really this prone to pontificating in real life and you seem like a really fun person ^^;; Do I have to resort to the cute thing again?
6) Ditto.
7) It's odd because I feel comfortable with you without necessarily knowing why. I think it's more that we're compatible yet different rather than alike :D Man, an OTP doesn't really count, but the love for dirty-bottom-boy!Draco probably does ;))
8) Hee.
9) That's a weird one. You'd be my Ginny, but er... my Ginny isn't necessarily canon!Ginny :)) Possibly you could also be Pansy, probably depends >:D That was rather flippant of me, though :>

People would totally reply to you, y'know <3 There's a lot of bored people on livejournal >:D
Eheheh I have to do this just for question #9. *cackles*
1) I don't think I did 'cause by the time I'd have gotten around to it-- felt like I knew you well enough to friend you back when you had a real-life journal at
2) I do visit it &
3) Heheheh posts about you and PsychoB, 'cause you two are <3 & also make me giggle
4) Probably anything that wasn't a photo ^^; Though I do think Dan is really cute :>
5) I think so :) I'm really much more silly/bubbly/dorky when I'm not writing meta lj posts :D I mean, in company :> I think I'm just a different person when I'm with someone more outgoing than I am ^^ I think if you ever met me, the idea of me being intimidating would make you giggle. Like, how serious does this (http://reenka.expecto-patronum.net/temp/umm.jpg) seem? :>
6) I think probably whenever I see your name pop up on a comment ^^; hee!
7) Well, what you said & also a certain soft-heartedness & probably loyalty to friends :)
8) sure, okay. ;))

defends Spock like the geek she is
Date: 2004-11-15 09:14 pm (UTC)I think I friended you after being impressed with your analysis of someone's fics on her journal... zahra mebee? And this was in your pre-capitalization day, which I feel shows my dedication.
But I had to add my 2 cents on Snape vs Spock. UM HELLO KINDNESS WHICH SPOCK HAS MUCH OF AND SNAPE HAS LITTLE OF?? HELLO ONE GUY RISING ABOVE CHILDHOOD TRAUMA AND ONE GUY WALLOWING IN IT??? HELLO ONE GUY WITH COMMAND ABILITIES AND ONE WITH... NOT.
ag!
>:O
Re: defends Spock like the geek she is
Date: 2004-11-15 11:21 pm (UTC)Yeah, the kindness/command competence thing I kinda thought was obvious so it wasn't really me being serious :)) I really don't think Spock is like Snape, it's okay :D Otherwise I'd like Snape more :))

2. Why did you first "friend" me?
Ficcage and good-feel H/D talk. Oh, the golden era...
3. What posts of mine do you like to read the best?
THE ONES ABOUT H/D AND NOT S/R - BUT ONLY IF YOU ARE IN A GOOD MOOD IE NOT WALLOWING IN THE ABYSSES OF DESPAIR.
4. What would you like me to write about that I don't?
Virgin fic in Grimmauld Place.
5. Do you think we would be friends in real life?
Yes. :D
6. How often do you read my journal?
As often as it pops up on my flist. Often go back and reread old feel-good exchanges.
7. What do we have in common?
Anarchy.
8. Will you post this in your journal so I can answer?
I hope. I'm lj-blocked at the moment.
9. If I were an HP character, who would I be?
Bastard child of Snape and Luna. Mostly because it gives you the creeps to think about Snape and Luna.
