I know this is weird but...

It just surprises me, how you can take anything, any point of view, any thought or song or story, and depending on how it's presented-- depending on the context-- it's totally different. It's like... suddenly it becomes deeper, and there's this whole layer of understanding you never knew was possible. It's a whole new world. And suddenly things you thought were cliche and shallow and stupid acquire a certain dignity, a certain insight, just because you have a new way of understanding the same thing. Yet it's not the same thing, exactly... understanding opens up this whole new vista of meaning so that it's the same thought but also different, as different as night and day, just because you -see- so much more of it. And suddenly it's not so stupid anymore.

I see it a lot with music vids. The songs that I'd never give a second thought to, that seem shallow and boring and stupid... put it in a certain context (the scenes that illustrate the lyrics and the music)... and suddenly the words acquire wings, have all this insight and meaning and feeling that I'd never be able to access, otherwise. It's like there's always more than one story going on within a good vid (the threads of the instrumental parts, the lyrics, and the different meanings of scene-in-relation-to-vid contrasting to the memory of scene-as-originally-placed). But the thing is, there's -always- more than one story going on, in every story. And of course, it's all one story, too-- it all makes a whole, it's just that the parts make it shine brighter.

It's like... the whole world is like that, you know? No matter what... there's always a deeper level of understanding, that makes everything more and more beautiful. But it's not hard to understand at all-- not esoteric, not -secret-. The thing that surprises me is-- how much -clearer- everything grows as you increase complexity. It's like... it becomes more whole, just... stronger, crisper, as if it's simply a question of higher resolution. And the more you connect seemingly disconnected things, the more you -know-; the more there's overlay of words and music and images and memories-- the more points of reference you have-- the more beautiful everything becomes. It's just... the beauty was always there, though, for the creator (of the song), because they had all this context in their minds, to start with, that they couldn't really translate into the lyrics, maybe.

It's like there's a hidden script everywhere people have left their mark, normally invisible or garbled, and if you can pass a certain kind of light over it... then there's this explosion of meaning everywhere, always multiplying. And you realize that it's not that you were wrong before-- not that -anyone- was wrong-- it's just that you'd never seen this much of the picture before. And when you do-- the more you do-- it becomes less like -knowing- and more like -feeling-, and the feeling is always joy.

See... this is... this is why I... do this. Makes no sense, does it? Does it?

Oh totally--I had a teacher in grad school who used to call this "giving an A reading to an E film." Because there was some system that rated movies on sort of their level of complexity or whatever, but he pointed out you could give a complex reading to just about everything.

And it's fun too--because it's usually not that off the wall. At least to me.:-D

I guess it totally makes sense 'cause what people -usually- do is give a simplified reading of complex films/stories, so why shouldn't it work the other way? It's like... it's all in your head anyway, so the sky's the limit, right :>

It's just cooler with multimedia 'cause there's more room for inspiration, with all those different threads interacting, more room for happy accidents of a sort, maybe? Maybe movies themselves rely on these happy accidents of meaning, being sort of multimedia (at least, dual-media, but really more, 'cause it's music & theatre & screenplay/writing as well as possibly the photography/visual element in some movies, too). Like vids 'cause they up the complexity yet -more- by upping the completeness of the mixture~:) heheheh.

Yeah, I think I'll just do a vid major now~:)
