The trick is using what's there & running with it.
I agree -- although I think wish fandom itself is rooted in wish fulfillment. For example, an extremely well-written H/D that references lots of canonical details can be viewed as OC off the bat simply because H/D never [explicitly] happened. Or would a BDSM Harry/Ginny fic be more canon than H/D? etc. In the end it's all about what the fan
to see, which is why to me a Mary-Sue fic is just as valid as arty intelliporn.
And re: bandslash, I don't have a problem with those who slash for teh hottness, either :P But my brow
raise when people say "I slash this band even though I can't stand their music". BOGGLES.
